Something small ran by my feet as I was picking pears in Harada\u2019s orchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFancy that, they\u2019re here,\u201d he said, and that\u2019s when I spotted them. They had white fur. There were three of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese fellers show up now and then,\u201d he said, putting imperfect pears unfit for shipment down on the ground. Two of the three creatures came over and started gnawing at the fruit. They were all more or less double the size of a pear. The two who had come over were now tearing into the pears on the ground with a crunch. But the third one stayed put.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHere ya go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harada plucked a pear from the tree and placed it in front of the third creature. And yet it was frozen in place. It was shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before long, Harada went to get a box to ship the pears. As I sorted the good from the bad, the two creatures polished off the pears in the blink of an eye, then set to work on the pear Harada had picked for the third one. It was still shaking. It would not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSomething wrong with that dude,\u201d came a voice, surprising me. It was one of the two creatures wolfing down the last pear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDon\u2019t even bother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLost cause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI mean, come on<\/em>, the pear\u2019s so yummy!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd sooo big!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n They went on in this way in shrill little voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I asked Harada about them as he came back carrying the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEvery once in a while they show up. I don\u2019t know what they are, but it\u2019s almost like these critters are a part of the pears themselves. They\u2019ll be gone before long, so just leave \u2018em alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n They talk<\/em>, I said. Harada nodded, looking irritated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYeah they can talk, but that\u2019s about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He started filling the box with the pears I\u2019d sorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once I was done with work for the day, I took one of the creatures, who were still puttering about my feet, and placed it on my palm. It was warm. My hand, exhausted from work, began to feel relaxed. When I asked Harada if I could take them with me, his eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat for?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n No reason, really, just \u2018cause. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Harada shrugged, with nothing more to say. With the creature who refused to eat the pear snug in my palm, I walked to my room. The other two hopped after me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I tried giving them leftovers from dinner, but they wouldn\u2019t eat any, so once again I offered them pears. They latched onto the pears. They ate them up, skin and all. This time, the third creature ate its pear too. All three creatures demolished them with incredible speed. In the blink of an eye, the six pears I had given them were gone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPears!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMore pears!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMore, MORE!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The two creatures who were the more hyper of the bunch were kicking up a fuss, so I gave them more. The shy one refused to eat another bite. I put a cold pack on my back as I looked at the mess they had made. It had been a little over a week since I started working at Harada\u2019s orchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lately I had been starting to feel each night like something was off<\/em>, as if something were slipping out of place. I sensed it could have been time that was slipping, perhaps everything else along with time too. That\u2019s how I ended up trying to find work in an orchard to do during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I reached out with my hand, and the shy creature climbed up onto it. It crawled up to my shoulder and touched the back of my neck. Its hand was small and covered in white fur. As it touched me, it began speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m not good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was breathing against my neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m not good at anything,\u201d it said, shrinking inward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What do you mean you\u2019re not good enough?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n It launched into a lengthy explanation. I was surprised with how chatty it was being with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLike, I can\u2019t handle it when I eat a pear and the pear goes poof, gone.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t handle it that I get hungry when I do stuff.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t handle how time goes by and it gets so dark.\u201d \u201cAnd how more time goes bye-bye and it gets bright outside.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t handle that when I go somewhere or leave somewhere, it\u2019s a different place than before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It told me all kinds of things about itself with a burning passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other two creatures finished up all of the extra pears, then sprawled out on the floor face up. Soon they were grunting out grumbling snores. I asked the one that was still awake if it was sleepy at all, but it shook its head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCan I stay up late with you? Can I stay up here with you forever?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes, yes, you can<\/em>, I replied. It came down off my shoulder and plopped on the desk, all prim and proper. It watched me clear up the mess from dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I looked back at it after I finished doing the dishes, and saw that it was sleeping. It was conked out, snoring even louder than the other two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The following morning, the three creatures sped toward the front door as I was getting ready to head out to the pear trees. Today was going to be a hot one. The instant I opened the door, the creatures shoved their way past each other to try to be the first one to get out. With the three of them clumped all together, it was hard to tell which of the three was the shy one. I was sweating as I walked to the orchard. They followed me, zipping in front of me, behind me, then back again. They were talking to each other in their squeaky voices, but I couldn\u2019t make out what they were saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All day I picked pears. In the afternoon, Harada came and sprayed pesticide at the base of the pear trees. The creatures climbed the trunk of one as he did so, and stared at him, wondering what on earth was in his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow did it go with them?\u201d Harada asked. \u201cAny issues after you brought them home?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n All they did was eat pears and go to sleep. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Harada laughed at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m telling you, just leave \u2018em behind tonight!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n The three of them immediately started screeching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNO!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, no, no!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\u2019re going<\/em> with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\u2019re going home<\/em> with you!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\u2019re gonna sleep at your place!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harada laughed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey know what they want now, don\u2019t they,\u201d he said as he spattered the ground with pesticide from a brass pole he had attached to his hose. The cicadas howled. Harada wiped the sweat off his face with the small towel hanging around his neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What are these creatures? <\/em>I was about to ask Harada, but I hesitated doing so in their presence. Once he was done spraying the pesticide, Harada stuck his face under the spigot the hose was attached to and splashed some water over his head. Then he gulped down a few scoops of water from his palms. Soon it would be evening. Bats were flying low in the air. The three creatures were yelling something incomprehensible to the bats. They stomped on the ground in frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harada gave me more junk pears than usual after I was done with work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou guys can go ahead and have these too,\u201d he said, handing me corn and eggplants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I came back to my room and gave the creatures the pears. I boiled the corn and offered it to them, but they wouldn\u2019t eat anything other than the pears. The two energetic creatures seemed even more comfortable with me than they were yesterday, racing up and down the shelves, picking up the phone and putting it to their ears, until finally they fell asleep on the floor with a kerplunk. The shyer creature sat on the desk, its eyes wide open. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You snored quite a bit last night<\/em>, I said. It looked offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDon\u2019t bring that up, I get embarrassed about it!\u201d \u201cSo what if I snore? It\u2019s fine if I do!\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s fine!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fine, fine, it\u2019s FINE!<\/em> it kept yelling. It was getting a little annoying. As night fell, that off <\/em>feeling, that Slip I\u2019d been feeling came back. Since I\u2019d come to work at the orchard, I\u2019d been falling asleep pretty well, but perhaps because of the excitement from the arrival of the three creatures, I wasn\u2019t able to sleep, and the Slip felt much worse than usual. I scrubbed the dishes to distract myself from the thought that something was wrong, but I couldn\u2019t seem to get it out of my head. I went outside and decided to head toward the orchard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I had the sense that the creature who was still awake was following me. Being in the darkness and feeling the Slip, I couldn\u2019t tell if it was actually behind me or not. I walked quickly. The heat from the day hung lukewarm in the air. It felt as if there were many shadows of myself piled on top of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I reached the orchard and started to dig through the soil. Once my eyes adjusted to the dark, I could see that the creature had in fact followed me. The moonlight gleamed on its white fur. It winced each time I swung my hoe down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Heave! Ho!<\/em> I plunged into the ground. Heave! Ho! Heave! Ho! <\/em>I plunged again into the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a while, it asked me why I was digging. I didn\u2019t answer and just kept digging, but then it asked why I was digging again. It asked again and again while I dug in silence. It asked me so many times that I roared out, GO AWAY!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n It looked up, mouth agape, then turned around and vanished into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The shyer creature didn\u2019t come back the next day, nor the day after that. I worked more intently than ever in the orchard. Every day the other two creatures went round and round the pear trees. I finished up work around sunset, then back to the room with them. They chowed down on the pears like they always did. What\u2019s the other guy up to, you think? <\/em>I asked them. They were hardly concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDunno.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBeats me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWon\u2019t be long before it\u2019s back.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSoon, super soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s probably crying somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cProbably crying!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Three days passed, four days passed, and yet it still hadn\u2019t returned. I was working harder and harder in the orchard, so Harada increased my pay by 1,000 yen a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou know, you can take it easy. Plants can only grow so fast, after all,\u201d he said, giving me my pay with the extra 1,000 yen. \u201cSpeaking of which, there\u2019s only two of those guys left, aren\u2019t there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I looked down at the ground. As I did, I saw the two lively creatures running loose by my feet. Harada didn\u2019t push any further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow about taking the day off?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m fine<\/em>. If I take a break I won\u2019t get any pears<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re quite the guardian, you,\u201d he said, laughing. The two creatures scrambled around me with lightning speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I woke up all of a sudden in the middle of the night. My chest felt weighed down. Moonlight poured in through a slit in the curtains. The two creatures were lying on their backs on the floor. The outlines of objects in the room were strangely distinct. I could see the lampshade, the basket with the pears, and the empty bottle on top of the desk only by their silhouettes. My chest felt terribly heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I reached for the area near my heart when I felt something there. I sprang up, and down hopped what was probably the missing creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wha-?<\/em> I shouted, as the creature bit down into the pillow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m home!\u201d \u201cI\u2019m back!\u201d \u201cAre you mad at me?\u201d \u201cAre you still mad?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I took it gently in my arms and nuzzled its little face against my cheeks. It surrendered to me. Its white fur tickled my face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re not angry, right?\u201d \u201cPhew.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It kept saying it was sorry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m not mad at all<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It patted me on the cheek with its hand, the fingers of which were the size of chickweed leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m the one who should be sorry<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then it hit me a little harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was kinda sad, you know.\u201d \u201cI cried a little.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It hit me over and over again. I let it hit away, as it grew brazen in its blows. That hurts<\/em>, I said, then it stopped and whispered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m hungry.\u201d \u201cGimme some pears.\u201d \u201cPeeaars.\u201d \u201cPears!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I pointed to the pear basket, then it lunged for it and began making an absolute mess of itself as it gobbled the pears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was near the end of August when Harada broke the news that it \u201cwas about time to wrap things up\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe season\u2019s basically done, so I can take it from here. There\u2019s a bit of a lull before the strawberry season in the greenhouses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Harada went up to the trunk of a pear tree and took a puff from his cigarette. He narrowed his eyes at the three creatures roaming around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDang, they\u2019re still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n My face snapped up to see Harada looking back at me, surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cJeez, I didn\u2019t tell you? They disappear when the season ends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was still daytime, and yet I had that slipping feeling. It felt like a version of myself the exact same size of me standing right there had popped out and walked away to who knows where.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI mean, they\u2019re sorta like bugs. <\/em>Have you never kept a beetle as a pet? When summer ends, they die. It\u2019s the same thing for these creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He gave one of them a small kick as he stubbed his cigarette out against the edge of an empty can. The creature popped back up from being kicked. Thinking it was funny, it hopped up into the air on its own. The other two copied it and started hopping around too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t worry about it, it\u2019s just the way it is with these guys.\u201d Harada drew a dozen or so pears from the shipping box, really big, juicy-looking pears, and handed them to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHere you go. You\u2019re welcome to come work here again if you\u2019d like. You were a great help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n I received my last pay, then went back to my room. I opened the envelope inside and found it contained 3,000 yen more than usual. The creatures stampeded over when I put the pears on the floor. They were getting juice all over their fur as they stuffed their faces with the fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That night, I was visited by an intense Slip. It wasn\u2019t the subtle sort of sliding I was used to, but violent, like the one earlier in the day when I was with Harada. It didn\u2019t feel like the air or the earth\u2019s axis was sliding out of joint, but rather as if my whole body was coming right out of itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I left my body and stood beside it. The three creatures were jumping around it as it slept. I\u2019d expected them to have fallen asleep earlier and be snoring by now, but they were jumping with energy far past their bedtimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d \u201cLeggo leggooo!\u201d \u201cTo the orchard!\u201d \u201cThe orchard, the orchard!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n They cried out in unison, shaking my body lying down on the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m not there anymore! I\u2019m standing here!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n They all looked up at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh right, you aren\u2019t.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re free, freee!\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s get outta here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n They scrambled up my legs all at once. They pointed toward the door. I left behind my body on the bed, put the creatures on my shoulder, and went outside. The summer night air drifted languid beside me. The pear trees stood planted in regular intervals in the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGo!\u201d \u201cCome on!\u201d \u201cHurry hurry!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The two hyper creatures jumped down to the ground at the same time. They sped up a pear tree, clung to the highest branch, and stopped moving. The shy one was still on my shoulders. Aren\u2019t you going to go up?<\/em> It shook its head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m not good enough.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m scared.\u201d \u201cReal scared.\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The creatures clinging to the tree were nibbling on the few remaining pears that had been left on the branches in the hopes of an abundant harvest the following year. Instead of scarfing them down as they always did, they seemed to be quietly savoring the pears. I looked at the one still on my shoulder and asked again, Are you sure you\u2019re not going?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI can\u2019t\u201d \u201cI told you, I\u2019m not good enough.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t want to not be myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re not good enough, how about we just go back to the room? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n It was silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019re not coming back with me?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n This time it nodded its head yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ok, well, what are you going to do?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n It wouldn\u2019t answer. The other two creatures had eaten every single pear that had been put up for next summer. Glued to the trunk of the tree, they looked like white knots that had grown in its bark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My body felt light. I felt lighter and lighter, even more than I did before we came out here. I had the sense that if I let my guard down, I\u2019d be sucked into a vacuum, sucked away to some unknown place from which I would never return. The creature on my shoulder was shivering. It was shivering just like the first time we met. My shoulder was warm and relaxed in the spot where I could feel it shivering. A gentleness spread bit by bit from my shoulders to my chest to my stomach to my arms to my legs. It was like I was in a warm bath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTake me to the tree in the back,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It sat on my shoulder as we walked to the back of the orchard. It hesitated for a second, then it jumped from my shoulder to the trunk of the tree, rushed up to the branches, and began devouring the pears left as an offering. It gorged itself on the pears, as if it were trying to catch up to the other two creatures. It had the same blank, unthinking expression it always had when it ate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m still<\/em> not good enough,\u201d it said to me once it was done eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Again, if you\u2019re not good enough, <\/em>I began, then paused. I was just as \u201cnot good enough.\u201d Who was I to say things like if you\u2019re not good enough <\/em>to living beings different than myself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n After five minutes of silence, the creature\u2019s grew strangely serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m not good enough, but I\u2019m going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its puny eyes, mouth, and nose glittered in the moonlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I felt apprehensive with the thought that it was really leaving. I felt incredibly lonely realizing I\u2019d be left behind. I almost blurted out, Don\u2019t go!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSee ya.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n The creature closed its eyes without another word. It then transformed into a knot on the tree before my very eyes. I touched the lump, but it wouldn\u2019t move. Oh no, it\u2019s a knot now,<\/em> I thought, touching it, as my body grew lighter and lighter, feeling as if I were being sucked into the knot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m going to be sucked in<\/em>, I thought. It\u2019s going to take me away.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The next thing I knew, I was striking the knot. My instincts were telling me to get away from it. No, let\u2019s go! <\/em>I thought I heard the voice of the creature yelling. No no no! <\/em>The instant it started yelling, all the weight from my body left me, and I felt myself zooming back to the room at a dizzying speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I returned to my body breathing in peace on the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I was soaked in sweat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next day I went to see Harada. I went to him not in my farm clothes as I usually did, but in the sort of clothes I\u2019d wear to town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhoa!\u201d he burst out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He then served me some tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I drank the tea, thanked him for hiring me for the season, and told him that I would be looking for other work after this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAlmost the 210th day of the lunar calendar, huh.\u201d He took a drag from his cigarette and peered up at the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAll these kids who were playing the whole summer, suddenly they\u2019re nowhere to be found. They\u2019re probably finishing up all the homework they didn\u2019t do over the break.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said this staring hard at the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On my way home I passed by the orchard, but I couldn\u2019t remember which trees had the white lumps on them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Thank you for everything<\/em>, I whispered under my breath, giving one of the pear trees a light pat. I thought I saw the three creatures chasing each other in the corner of my eye, so I turned around, but there was nothing there. A small dragonfly was gliding low to the ground.
